Our story
At over 1,000 meters above sea level, where the forests seem endless and the silence is broken only by the murmur of mountain streams and birdsong, lies Comandău — one of the most picturesque and authentic destinations in Covasna County. Here, deep in the mountains and far from the bustle of city life, we chose to build a place dedicated to relaxation, nature and getting back to what truly matters.
But our story begins with the story of this remarkable land.
Comandău — a village born from the forest
Nestled in the mountain depression of the Brețcu Mountains, along the upper course of the Bâsca Mare river, Comandău is one of the highest permanent settlements in Transylvania, sitting at approximately 1,017 meters above sea level. Its name derives from the German term "Grenzkommando", which referred to the old border guard post once stationed near the frontier between the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Romania.
Well over a century ago, the area was almost entirely covered by dense spruce and fir forests. The abundance of timber attracted investors and engineers who transformed the region into a major forestry hub. From the 1880s onwards, the first settlements for workers were built here, and the growth of the timber industry gave rise to the village we know today.
Comandău quickly became a remarkable place for its time. Workshops, warehouses, forestry railways and ingenious timber transport systems were built to bring wood down from the mountains to the valley. The area saw spectacular growth, becoming a model of technical innovation and industrial organization.
The legacy of the forest railway
One of the most fascinating stories of this place is tied to the famous Covasna–Comandău forest railway and the "Inclined Plane" — an engineering feat unique in Europe. Designed in the late 19th century, this system allowed the transport of logs and materials by harnessing the difference in elevation between the mountains and the valley. For decades, the steam locomotive and timber-laden wagons were a familiar part of everyday village life.
Although forestry activity declined after the 1990s, the traces of this history are still visible today. The old tracks, preserved locomotives and the stories of the locals are a reminder of the time when Comandău was one of the most important forestry centers in the region.
The nature that remained untouched

Surrounded by forested mountains, Comandău offers a landscape that changes spectacularly with each season. Spring brings the fresh green of the forests and the crisp scent of the awakening earth. Summer's cool mountain air and shaded trails offer a true escape from the city heat. Autumn paints the hillsides in shades of gold and rust, while winter transforms the entire area into a fairytale setting blanketed in snow.
The surrounding forests are home to rich biodiversity, crystal-clear springs and numerous trails that invite exploration. It is a place where time seems to slow down, where you can truly listen to the silence, and where every sunrise brings a fresh perspective on the beauty of nature.
Our place within this story
Driven by a desire to share the charm of this corner of the world, we created a retreat for those seeking peace, comfort and authenticity.
Our seven bungalows are set within a generous natural setting, allowing each guest to enjoy privacy and spectacular mountain views. Nearby, the fishing pond offers the perfect spot for quiet mornings, lazy afternoons and peaceful evenings spent outdoors.
Here, days begin with crisp mountain air and the scent of pine resin, and unfold through forest walks, fishing, exploring the surroundings or simply doing nothing at all. And when evening falls, the starlit sky and the deep silence are a reminder of the simple things that truly matter.

For us, this place means more than just a holiday destination. It is an invitation to rediscover nature, the joy of time spent together, and the pleasure of living at a slower, more meaningful pace.
Comandău doesn't impress through noise and bustle, but through authenticity. Through its ancient forests, the history hidden among the mountains, and the sense of peace it offers every traveler who crosses its threshold.

An extraordinary peaceful retreat, nestled in the heart of nature. The lodges are clean and welcoming, and the pond and hot tub are the perfect way to unwind. The food is excellent, especially the fresh fish. An evening by the campfire is an experience you'll never forget.
If you're looking for the real outdoors, this is the place. ATV riding through the forest was the highlight, and fishing in the pond was wonderfully relaxing. The lodges are simple but comfortable, and evenings around the campfire add a truly magical touch to the whole experience.
We had a wonderful stay here. Everything feels naturally in place, the lodges are comfortable, and the peaceful surroundings give you a complete digital detox. The ATV rides and pond fishing were great fun, and an evening soak in the hot tub was exactly what we needed.
